1. The Diablo Range

Just to the east of Patterson you’ll find the rising foothills of the magnificent Pacific Coast Range, which is also known as the Diablo Range.
 
The region has an enormous variety of gorgeous terrain to explore, from rolling grasslands to blue oak woodlands. Add to that more than 150 species of birds to keep an eye out for, and you’ll realize why the Diablo Range is such an idyllic area to hike.
 

2. San Luis Reservoir

Nestled in the grassy hills of the western San Joaquin Valley, San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area is a big hit with hikers.

San Luis Reservoir was constructed as a storage reservoir for the California State Water Project. It stores runoff water from the Delta that would otherwise flow into the ocean.
 
There are some great trails to explore, from the five-mile San Luis Creek accessible trail that runs along the O’Neill Forebay shoreline, to the six-mile Lone Oak trail, which begins near the Basalt boat ramp. And, of course, you can always take a dip at San Luis Creek’s North Beach if it’s a hot day.
 

3. Carson-Iceberg Wilderness

Over in Stanislaus National Forest, -Iceberg Wilderness straddles the crest of the Sierra Nevada range.
 
There you’ll find some incredible high country, with several peaks rising majestically above 10,000 feet. An unusual granite formation called the Iceberg on the southern boundary gives this area its name.
 
You'll can hike through forests thick in pines or wind you way past some beautiful lakes and peaceful cattle-grazing allotments.
